Though loyal to the Republic as any of his fellow clone troopers, Rys was often frustrated by his posting on Coruscant, protecting the Senate district or serving as a diplomatic escort. He felt the fight needed to be taken to the enemy in the Clone Wars, and often voiced as much to his squad-mates. When off-duty, he would, as a hobby, track the movement of Republic fleet assets and follow the course of the war as it unfolded in the Outer Rim.
Rys got a taste of action when he was assigned to escort Jedi Master Yoda on a diplomatic mission to the coral moon of Rugosa. Alongside trooper Jek and Lieutenant Thire, Rys followed Yoda as they crash-landed on the moon's surface after being shot down by Separatist frigates. The three clones and Yoda then had the get past an entire battalion of battle droids in order to secure a much needed treaty with King Katuunko of Toydaria.
During the mission, Yoda advised Rys to take inspiration from his allies, not from focusing upon his enemies. It was an important lesson that Rys took to heart.
